What is Naturopathy?
Naturopathy is a system of natural medicine that enhances the body’s ability to heal itself. It is based on the philosophy of natural law, which means living your life in balance - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Only when there is an imbalance in anyone or more of these aspects of self can dis-ease exist. The art of naturopathy is in discovering where these imbalances lie and rectifying them.
For example, if you suffer from arthritis, anti- inflammatory medication will certainly be helpful but it may not be enough. If we investigate further and look at you holistically, we may discover that your lifestyle and dietary habits are promoting the arthritic changes in your body, or that your high stress levels are negatively impacting the way your body tries to heal itself. On top of this, living with chronic pain may leave you feeling a little down, this in itself can inhibit your immune system, making you more susceptible to other health issues.
Treatment may incorporate any of the following disciplines or natural remedies: Herbal medicine, homeopathy, nutrition, dietary and lifestyle advice, iridology, flower essences, stress management, massage, counselling and meditation.
Ongoing scientific research within the field of natural medicine has shown that traditional naturopathic practices are valid and effective.
What do naturopaths treat?
Naturopathy is suitable for all age groups, all stages of life and for all manner of health concerns. In particular:
What to expect
During your first consult, you will be asked what it is you would like help with. Our naturopath will hear you out and then ask a series of questions regarding your particular health issue.
You will then be taken through a comprehensive health check, looking for any patterns of dis-ease or underlying issues that may be contributing to the original complaint. Any insights in this regard will be fed back to you.
Utilising both Western medical and naturopathic diagnostic techniques, a diagnosis and treatment plan will be formulated. Each treatment plan and associated remedies are specific for the individual being treated.
Where remedies are supplied, their therapeutic qualities and expected outcomes will be explained to you in full.
The naturopathic encounter is very much a partnership and your participation in your own recovery will be encouraged, for example, you may be asked to commit to dietary or lifestyle modifications or perhaps periods of self- reflection.
Most health care providers cover naturopathic consultations and as such, rebates may apply.
